Better bet than PET
PET is an amazing material for packaging and has worked wonders for many beverage categories.
Earlier this month, however, an immensely important announcement was made, heralding commercial production by 2017 of a new material that could rapidly take the market by storm.
Dutch based Avantium’s announcement of a $50 million investment by a range of companies including Coca-Cola and Danone promises:
• a 100% plant based plastic “not in direct competition with food and 100% recyclable”
• “enhanced barrier, thermal and mechanical properties”
• “lighter, thinner, smaller and stronger bottles”
• a “50-70% reduction in carbon footprint.”
In my view, the new YXY brand for PEF has the potential to meet all current consumer concerns about oil-derived materials.
