With such a media spotlight on sustainability, Zenith’s 2018 UK Bottled Water Conference on 15 March in London will open with a breakfast briefing on finding more sustainable packaging solutions. The session features Coca Cola, compliance experts Ecosurety and environment charity Hubbub, with moderation by the Packaging Collective.

Taking up the challenge of “Inspiring consumers to value packaging and encourage recycling while on the go”, the session will bring together industry members to discuss consumer concerns, focus on areas of opportunity and create a positive way forward for brand owners, suppliers and retailers.

The briefing will review the latest recycling initiatives, including reverse vending and deposit schemes, as well as offering case studies illustrating the importance of producer responsibility in building consumer awareness on effective packaging waste management.

Under the theme Thirst: New priorities for bottled water, the rest of the conference will look beyond the market today at accelerating the prospects of a brighter tomorrow. Delegates will hear from established companies as well as innovators on: market, consumer and retail trends; how aqua plus drinks are evolving; the latest in innovation; and other social and environmental challenges facing the industry.

Sanjay Patel, Founder of Simple Better Human and Packaging Collective

Sanjay Patel has worked in the packaging industry for over 25 years in the USA, Belgium and UK.  As a cross category packaging innovator he has contributed to the electronics, agrochemical and personal care industries during his career. 

He has recently left The Coca-Cola Company after 14 years where he looked after packaging for the Global water category for several years, building a 2-20 year shared value innovation strategy. Responsible for structural design, innovation and creativity within EMEA he also helped train up to 200 people a year as well as run internal hackathons, sprints and more holistic insight based innovation programs.  He is now a founding partner of both Simple Better Human and the Packaging Collective.

James Piper, Managing Director of Ecosurety

James Piper is managing director of Ecosurety, the market leading compliance scheme investing in quality recycling.

James joined Ecosurety in 2009 as the marketing account manager. Having researched the compliance market and the detail of the producer responsibility regulations, James initially worked as a client account specialist supporting members with the packaging regulations and providing analysis and application of the regulations within extremely varying business environments.

Now managing director, James combines his past market experience and the work undertaken directly with companies to ensure all Ecosurety members benefit from the best possible price and expertise. In 2017 he won a Business Green Leaders Award and featured in the Resource magazine annual top 100 list of the most influential people working in the waste industry.

Trewin Restorick, Founder and Chief Executive of Hubbub UK

Trewin Restorick is Founder and CEO of the award-winning charity Hubbub UK  which transforms the way environmental messages are communicated by bringing people and organisations together as a force for good.  He is also Chair of Student Hubs http://www.studenthubs.org/

Previously Trewin created Global Action Plan the UK’s leading environmental behaviour change charity. Trewin is a frequent media commentator on environmental issues and was trained by Al Gore as one of his climate change ambassadors.

Before starting Global Action Plan, Trewin was Director of Fundraising at Friends of the Earth where he created PaperRound London’s leading community recycling business.  Prior to Friends of the Earth, Trewin worked at Plymouth City Council and produced a youth TV programme for the BBC called Something Else.

Simon Johnson, Principle Consultant at Zenith Global

Simon Johnson is part of Zenith’s Market Intelligence team, specialising in West European food and beverage markets. His responsibilities include recruiting and managing a team of associates across West Europe, project management of market research and consultancy projects, leading on market research reports and developing the products and services of the Market Intelligence team.

Rali Sanderson is Executive Vice President of International and R&D at Niagara Bottling. He also serves on Niagara’s Executive Board, is Chairman of the Niagara Advisory Board in Mexico, and sits on the board of Nu-Pure Beverages in Australia. Niagara has experienced a phenomenal 35% CAGR during his 14-year tenure. At the same time, he has minimized Niagara’s environmental impact per unit by more than 50%.  Rali graduated from the University of Denver’s Daniels School of Business with a major in International Business and Honors Studies, and from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business.  He current lives in Southern California with his wife Briana.

 

Clark Mcllroy, Managing Director of Red Star Brands

Clark founded Red Star Brands in 2015 to introduce disruptive, innovative snack & beverage brands to the UK market. To date these have included FULFIL Sports Nutrition bars, SPARKLING ICE, BAI, and STARBUCKS RTD, driving a combined retail turnover of some £30m in 2017. Inspired by new brands & trends in overseas markets Clark and the Red Star team continually seek to partner with challenger brands that meet unmet consumer needs and which have a strong ambition to achieve scale and redefine the future.

Red Star is part of an independently owned group of companies in the UK & Ireland with a combined turnover of £0.3bn. Julian Hunt, Head of Public Affairs and Communications GB for Coca-Cola European Partners

Julian Hunt joined Coca-Cola European Partners in 2011 as Vice President of Public Affairs and Communications for GB. In this role he is responsible for all aspects of CCEP’s internal and external communications in this country, as well as its sustainability and Government affairs programmes. Before CCEP, Julian was Director of Communications at the Food and Drink Federation from 2006 to 2011, during which time he helped to steer the industry through many challenging debates, not least on public health. A journalist by background, Julian’s last role in the media was as Editor of The Grocer magazine – a post he held for five years until joining FDF in 2006. Julian plays a wider role in the industry. In June 2013 he joined the Board of OPRL Ltd, the organisation which runs the packaging recycling information scheme in Great Britain. He is proud also to have supported the work of other organisations including the School Food Trust, FareShare and GroceryAid during his career.

CJ Antal – Smith, Director of Trading – BWS at The Co-op

CJ Antal-Smith is Director of Trading for BWS, Impulse & Kiosk at Co-op. Having worked for Co-op for over 5 years, she has played a key role in growing the retailer’s partnership with the One Foundation to apply 3p per litre charity donations on all Co-op own brand water, channelling the funding to clean water projects round the world.

Together this has meant a total £8milliominvestment in WASH projects and disaster aid funding in developing countries, changing the lives of 1.7million people. Most recently, CJ has worked closely with the bottled water brands to pledge commitment to the Global Investment Fund for Water – which aims to end water poverty by 2030 in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. This partnership has taken the Co-op’s annual  funding figure for clean water projects to over £2million.

Stuart Foster, Chief Executive Officer of RECOUP

Stuart Foster is Chief Executive Officer at RECOUP, an independent membership based organisation developing, informing and leading plastics recycling opportunities. He is also a director of EPRO, the European Association of Plastic Recycling and Recovery Organisations.  Since 2000, Stuart has worked on a range of technical, research and demonstration projects to develop UK plastics recycling activities, with a focus on packaging design, collection systems, sorting technologies, communications, strategy and legislation. He is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Wastes Management and held positions at the Environment Agency and within Local Government before joining RECOUP.

James Lowman, Chief Executive of Association of Convenience Stores

James was appointed ACS Chief Executive in November 2006, since when he has re-focused the organisation on being the strongest possible voice for local shops. He has led a unique research programme that informs ACS’ policy work, launched an industry-leading assured advice scheme in partnership with Surrey County Council, created a new and unique events programme, and increased membership and engagement from all parts of the industry. He has been recognised for his work with outstanding achievement awards from Palmer & Harvey, YIGA, and the Retail Industry Awards. James is a member of ministerial advisory groups including the Future High Streets Forum, the National Retail Crime Steering Group and the Retail Policy Forum. He also sits on the boards of Community Alcohol Partnerships and the Proof of Age Standards Scheme (PASS).

James joined ACS in 1997 and progressed to Public Affairs Director, running all ACS policy and communications work including successful campaigns to preserve Sunday trading laws in 2006, to see the grocery market referred to the Competition Commission in 2005, and to support members during the transition to the Licensing Act 2003. James has a degree in Politics from the University of Essex, and an MBA from Kingston Business School.

Alice Ellison, Environmental Policy Adviser for the British Retail Consortium

Alice Ellison is the Environment Policy Adviser for the British Retail Consortium.  The British Retail Consortium (BRC) is the leading voice of the retail sector, representing small and independent stores through to the large multiples.  Alice’s remit includes resource efficiency and climate change. Alice was previously a Policy Manager on transport and environment issues for London Councils, the representative body for London’s 33 boroughs, where she led on London Councils’ work on local environmental quality, waste, aviation and rail policy.

Emma Hunt, Head of Marketing at Nichols plc

BIOG: Emma is Head of Marketing for Nichols plc, the home of Vimto & Feelgood drinks and is responsible for leading the marketing strategy across their UK, Out of Home and International divisions. She has been with the business since 2009 and heads up a team that have doubled the size of their lead brand in the last 10 years. An experienced practitioner, Emma has worked in fmcg brand marketing for the last 20 years and was the 2016 CIM Northern Marketer of the Year. Prior to this she held a number of marketing positions client and agency side across a range of sectors including Education, Consumer Durables and Market Research.

Joe Benn, Co-Founder of Ugly Drinks

Rafael Rozenson, Founder of Vievė

Rafael Rozenson is the founder of CEO of Vieve Protein Water - a game changing new protein drink that aims to shake-up the sports nutrition market, by making it more accessible to a mass market audience.  Rafael has a a strong background in consumer goods having worked in the industry for 12 years in a variety of blue-chip FMCG companies such as  Procter & Gamble, Disney, Bacardi, GSK, Danone and most recently Mars Chocolate.

Alex Wright and Jack Scott, Founders of Dash Water

Alex & Jack both come farming backgrounds and have seen first hand 30% of the fruit & veg grown in the UK gone to waste. Ira Laufer, Chief Executive Officer of JUST Water

Born in Tel Aviv, JUST water CEO Ira Laufer participated in a real-life “course of study” defined by rigors that rival those of any white-collar corporation: the Israeli Defense Forces. Recognized with the “Award for Excellence” by the President of Israel, he set out for the Big Apple upon his completion of service. A similar dedication and diligence earmarked the beginnings of his career stateside. He worked his way up through the ranks at Angel’s Bakery four years and became the franchise’s general manager.  Building off that experience he transitioned to Vitalicious where he climbed his way up to the office of COO.  Following completion of his degree at the presitigious Stern Business School at New York University, Ira took Vitalicious yearly revenue from $200K to surpass $42 million.  2012 saw him join Red’s Natural Food as COO. Throughout those four years, he re-branded and re-launched the company with a new look, packaging, items, pricing, and promotional strategy that lifted revenue from $4 million to mid $XX million. Cementing Red’s Natural Food as a leader in the space, he launched his own consulting firm in 2016.  Transitioning to JUST Water in 2017, the brand mission and message immediately spoke to Ira. Now, his direct, transparent, and focused approach empowers the JUST team to share and support that message worldwide for a long time to come.

Guidelines for sampling

What is ‘Chiller Corner’?

The ‘Chiller Corner’ is your chance to have your product sampled at the conference. It is an area in the pre function networking room specially set up with fridges and sampling cups to enable brands to showcase innovative products.

How does sampling work?

You are not required to supervise product sampling. Products will be displayed in the unmanned fridges and recyclable sampling cups will be made available.

What to supply?

Each brand company who successfully secures a spot within ‘Chiller Corner’ will be allocated two rows (approx. ½ shelf) to display product. Please provide up to 30 product samples and the Zenith team will ensure your products are kept restocked throughout the day.

Restrictions:

Ready-to-drink, finished bottled water drinks only (includes flavour and functional).
