Coke and Nestlé lead Europe's top 100
Coke and Nestlé have strengthened their leadership positions in the European soft drinks industry, according to the latest report on Europe's Top 100 Soft Drinks Companies from specialist consultants Zenith International.
"Nestlé at number 2 has recently increased its stakes in Italy's San Pellegrino at number 5 and Germany's Überkingen at number 15. This adds more volume than the entire sales of PepsiCo in 4th place and makes Nestlé a major force in carbonates as well as bottled water," comments Zenith Chairman Richard Hall.
"Coca-Cola has not only been masterminding a massive restructuring which is now building up to the creation of Coca-Cola Beverages, it is also in the process of taking over Orangina from France's Pernod Ricard which is ranked 17th."
Danone at 3rd and San Benedetto at 6th were the next two largest bottled water companies in 1996. Schweppes at 7th was the other leading carbonates producer.
Out of the full Zenith Top 100, Germany had 20 entries, France 15, Italy 14, the United Kingdom 10 and Spain 8. There were 10 groups with international activities in a range of countries. The top 20 groups accounted for 53% of total industry sales volume.
