Geothermal Partnership Formed Between Zenith and Loopmaster
Geothermy hit the news when Paul Allen of Microsoft and the Queen decided to install ground-source heating systems. Developed in North America, the benefits are now being realised elsewhere - reducing the costs of heating and cooling as well as reducing reliance on fossil fuels and thus carbon dioxide emissions. Systems experts Loopmaster Europe and groundwater consultants Zenith International have announced a new partnership to help more landowners take advantage of this technology.
From about one metre below ground, the temperature is constant at around 10 °C. On average, this is warmer than the air in winter and cooler than the air in summer. This difference in temperature lies at the heart of the systems. In the summer, heat is “dumped” into the ground; in the winter, it is removed. "The technology is proven in the United States, where cost savings can be as much as 30%," commented Iain Howley, Director of Loopmaster. The most efficient systems are known as open-loop systems, where water is abstracted from and re-injected into an aquifer. Closed-loop systems, where a network of pipes is installed under the ground and water is pumped through them, are usually cheaper and better suited to smaller developments. "For a really big development, open-loop can prove to be extremely cost effective ", added Iain.
“Changes in legislation mean that the impact of any heat load on the environment must now be assessed”, said Dr Ric Horobin, Water & Environment Manager at Zenith. “With our expertise in modelling water and heat movement in the ground, we believe that this partnership provides all the services required to exploit this technology successfully."
Loopmaster and Zenith offer a comprehensive consultancy and project management service in all aspects of ground-source heating installations. Zenith also provides a full groundwater advisory service, assisting with the safe development and protection of groundwater resources around the United Kingdom and internationally.
