1.9 Million Water Coolers in East Europe

The East European water cooler market climbed to a record 1.9 million units installed at the end of 2013, up 9.9% on 2008, according to a new report from the sector’s leading specialist consultancy Zenith International.

The market is dominated by bottled water coolers with a 64% share. Pump and other dispensers have a 32% share. Point of use mains water coolers are beginning to make their presence felt, with nearly 60,000 units fitted to reach a 3% share.

Ukraine and Russia were among the best performing markets, increasing their overall installed base by close to double-digit rates, with Serbia also seeing solid growth. “Even though Serbia has the highest unemployment rate in the region, a reduction in prices and strong promotional activitiy by the leading companies contributed to continuing progress,” commented Zenith Consultant Iva Hatzold. “This again demonstrates that, even in unfavourable economic times, the right service and marketing strategies can boost markets further.”

Russia remains the largest cooler market with a 40% share in 2013, followed by Poland and Ukraine. The same three countries also ranked highest for bottled coolers and dispensers. Poland and Romania lead the point of use segment, holding a combined 70% share.

Zenith forecasts that the total market will reach over 2.4 million units by the end of 2018. Compared with West Europe, the point of use segment is expected to remain less developed. “To make stronger inroads in the region, point of use suppliers would need to focus more on the potential benefits such as cost savings, greater convenience and lower environmental impact,” concluded Iva Hatzold.
