Bottled water continues its global growth surge
The global bottled water market continues to surge ahead, advancing by 9.2% to 155,400 million litres in 2003 - the same growth rate as in 2002, according to the 2004 Global Bottled Water report from leading drinks consultancy Zenith International.
Average consumption per person has risen from 16 litres in 1998 to 25 litres in 2003. Thus bottled water is rapidly catching up with carbonated soft drinks at 31 litres, but has a long way to go before it reaches the level of tea at 53 litres.
"The impetus behind bottled water, in terms of growth and long term opportunity, is now undeniable," commented Zenith Research Director Gary Roethenbaugh. "Bottled water’s benefits - ranging from purity and convenience to hydration and lifestyle - are perhaps stronger today than they have ever been."
Among the points highlighted by the Zenith report:
West Europe was the biggest consuming region in 2003, with a 28% share.
Asia/Australasia is the fastest growing region, passing North America in 1999 and Latin America in 2001.
The United States and Mexico were the two largest markets in 2003, with China and Indonesia likely to push Italy back to fifth place by 2008.
Italy has already given way to the United Arab Emirates as having the highest consumption per person because of growing tourism there, while Malta and Spain are also poised to pass France within five years.
Still water has tended to outpace sparkling water, reaching 82% of total volume in 2003.
Bulk sizes above 10 litres have risen to a 36% overall share.
The world’s top four bottled water companies - respectively Danone, Nestlé, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo - held a combined 31% share of total volume in 2003, though Nestlé was market leader in terms of value. Danone owns three of the top 10 brands by volume, including number one Aqua from Indonesia. Nestlé, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo each have two brands in the top 10.
Providing detailed forecasts by country for the next five years, Zenith expects bottled water to crash through the 200 billion litre barrier in 2008. Asia/Australasia is set to overtake West Europe in 2007, led by China, Indonesia, India and South Korea.
