Bottled water to overtake carbonates worldwide within five years
The global bottled water market advanced by 4.7% to 163 billion litres in 2004, according to the new 2005 Global Bottled Water report from leading drinks consultancy Zenith International. This was significantly below the weather assisted 9.6% uplift recorded in 2003. However, 2005 growth is expected to rebound, taking global consumption over 173 billion litres.
The rise in 2004 came despite a downturn in the world’s biggest consuming region of West Europe, which recorded a 4.2% drop due to low summer temperatures and high rainfall. East Europe was similarly hit by poor weather, but strong underlying growth pushed its market forward by 2.9%. The main impetus was provided by increases of 11.3% in Asia/Australasia, 8.6% in North America, 10.0% in Africa, 9.8% in the Middle East and 5.0% in Latin America.
"Across the world, consumers are increasingly turning to bottled water as it becomes more accessible and as the health and hydration benefits become more widely accepted," commented Zenith Research Director Gary Roethenbaugh. "Within five years, Zenith expects global consumption per person to exceed that of carbonated soft drinks."
Among other points highlighted by the Zenith report:
West Europe was the largest consuming region in 2004, with a 25.9% share.
Asia/Australasia is the fastest growing region, accounting for 24.5% of 2004 global volume and forecast to overtake West Europe in 2005.
The United States and Mexico were the two largest national markets in 2004, with China and Indonesia likely to push Italy back to fifth place by 2008.
Still water has outpaced sparkling water, reaching 83% of total volume in 2004.
Bulk sizes above 10 litres have risen to a 35% overall share.
The world’s top four bottled water companies - respectively Danone, Nestlé, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo - held a combined 32% share of total volume in 2004, up from 31% in 2003. Nestlé was market leader in terms of value. Danone owns four of the top 10 brands by volume, including number one Aqua from Indonesia. Nestlé and PepsiCo each have two brands in the top 10, while Coca-Cola has one.
Providing detailed forecasts by country for the next five years, Zenith predicts bottled water consumption will reach 217 billion litres in 2009.
