Chilled is rising star of European fruit juice market
Chilled juice consumption has more than doubled since 1990 and is rapidly heading towards 10% of European fruit juice volume, according to a recent report from specialist consultants Zenith International. 1997 sales across the 16 countries of West Europe reached 550 million litres, 8.8% of an overall 6250 million litres for 100% fruit juice.
The United Kingdom has by far the largest chilled juice sector at over 200 million litres, 39% of the European total. France comes second with a 14% share, followed by two much smaller countries - Sweden on 10% and Greece on 7%.
Chilled juice has a massive 43% share of national consumption in Greece, 30% in Sweden, 24% in the United Kingdom and 23% in Finland. Local market shares also exceed 10% in Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Norway and Portugal.
"New product entries such as Minute Maid Danone boosted the chilled sector even further in 1998, but growth is being held back by limited progress in Europe’s highest juice consuming countries of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, where the chilled share is below 2%," comments Zenith Research Manager Jason Holway.
"Chilled drinks are much less significant in the 2300 million litre market for nectars containing 25-99% juice, but have just begun to come alive for still drinks with up to 25% juice since the UK launch of Sunny Delight in April 1998," Jason Holway concludes.
The Zenith Report on the Fruit Juice Market in Europe covers fruit juice and nectar segments, flavours, packaging and companies across 16 countries from 1992 to 1997 with forecasts to 2002.
