Russian beer consumption up 13% in 1997
Beer consumption in Russia rose by 13% to 25.9 million hectolitres in 1997, according to a new report from specialist consultants Zenith International.
"The national average of under 20 litres per person is lower than any West European country, but the Moscow and St Petersburg level of 60 litres is much closer to the West European average of 80 litres per person," comments Zenith Chairman Richard Hall.
Beer accounts for only 10% of all commercial beverage consumption at present, compared with 14% for soft drinks, 21% for milk based drinks and 41% for tea.
The two largest Russian brewers are Sun Brewing and Baltika with a combined 28% market share. Imported beers are responsible for another 10% of the market led by Bavaria of the Netherlands, Stroh of Austria and Holsten of Germany.
"Our future projections indicate that overall volumes should climb a further 37% by the year 2000. Particular growth will be experienced by dark beers, beer in cans and sales through supermarkets," concludes Richard Hall.
