Sustainable management of groundwater will be vital
The imminent introduction of Catchment Abstraction Management Strategies (CAMS) in England and Wales means that groundwater abstraction licences will come under heavy scrutiny in the near future. As part of a major shake up by the Environment Agency in England and Wales, all groundwater abstractions are to be reviewed and many could lose their in-perpetuity status. This major change is part of the UK Government's response to the introduction of the EU Water Framework Directive.
Zenith International's Water and Environment team believes that the Environment Agency CAMS programme will put many water abstractors under tremendous pressure to review and become more efficient in their usage of water. Water and Environment Director, Peter Easton, said: "There will be many holders of abstraction licences who will come under pressure from the Environment Agency to reassess the volumes of water they require, particularly when varying or trying to obtain a new abstraction licence. The commercial implications of this are profound."
Zenith has been working very closely with a number of its clients to assess the impact that CAMS may have on their businesses and has been successful in negotiating commercially critical increases to water abstraction licences. Peter Easton added: "The experience that Zenith has in the bottled water and soft drinks sectors and our experience with dealing with the Environment Agency make us ideally placed to negotiate on behalf of our clients. The future growth of businesses in these sectors depends on the availability of their single most important asset - water."
Anyone concerned about the impact that CAMS may have on their business or those that want advice on any other groundwater issues should contact Peter Easton or Julian Hatherall at Zenith International on tel +44 (0)1225 327900, fax +44 (0)1225 327901 or e-mail gw@zenithinternational.com
