UK bottled water bubbles back
After hitting the buffers in 1996, UK bottled water sales steamed ahead by 13% to 895 million litres in 1997, according to the latest annual UK Bottled Water Market Guide from specialist consultants Zenith International. Industry revenues advanced beyond £400 million at retail prices, but were held back by intense price competition, particularly amongst supermarket own labels.
Increasing everyday use has meant a growing share for still waters, which rose by 18% to a 70% volume share. Other 1997 winners were spring waters up 29% to a 27% share and water coolers up 27% to a 14% share.
Imported waters staged a recovery from a gradual long term decline in influence, jumping 15% to a 27% share. Retailer own labels also bounced back by 14% to a 27% share. PET bottles now account for 61% of total volume, following a concerted move from PVC.
Overall market leader is Premier Waters with the top two brands, Evian and Volvic. Perrier Vittel is the second largest player with Buxton ranked 4th, Vittel at 12th and Perrier at 13th. Highland Spring is the biggest UK producer, with its Highland Spring brand placed equal second. Tesco's Caledonian is the leading supermarket brand, produced by Campsie Spring.
Looking into the new millennium, Zenith Chairman Richard Hall says "the industry's track record since 1990 has kept remarkably close to a growth trend of 10% a year and we expect that to continue for several more years to come."
