Water explosion in Middle East
Water cooler companies in the Middle East gained 48% more direct delivery customers in 1998, taking the total to almost 280,000, according to a new report from specialist consultants Zenith International.
Overall bottled water consumption in the Middle East has been growing by around 7% a year to reach 3600 million litres. Bulk water volumes have risen by 8% or more to 860 million litres and a 24% share.
The report shows that a rapidly increasing proportion of the predominantly 19 litre bulk water market is becoming more service oriented, using a combination of electric water coolers, water dispensers with taps and hand pumps.
Israel had the largest number of serviced units in 1998 at 120,000. Turkey was second on 35,000. Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Bahrain each had 20-25,000.
Offices account for over 60% of bulk water distribution in Bahrain, Cyprus, Kuwait and Oman, whereas homes are responsible for the majority in most other countries.
Al Manhal of Saudi Arabia was the leading bulk water company by volume in 1998, followed closely by Eden Springs of Israel and Aqua Cool which has operations in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait.
With markets just beginning to emerge in Egypt, Qatar, Iran, Iraq and Syria, Zenith forecasts a bulk water market approaching 1300 million litres in 2002 with 550,000 units being directly serviced by the industry.
