Butter bounces back
Both in Britain and in France. Latest figures from Kantar Worldpanel in The Grocer and from Nielsen in LSA tell a similar story.
In Britain, spreadable butter volume was up 6.0% in the year to April 2013 and block butter was up 8.7%, while the overall butter and spreads market was flat and buttery spreads were down 3.8%.
In France, total butter volume was up a more modest 1.4% in the year to March 2013, with lighter 60% butters up a healthier 10.4%.
In each case, the reasons included growing appreciation of natural products in preference to those perceived as requiring more industrial processes. Strong promotions to give better value also helped.
