One third of all food wasted
“We simply cannot allow one third of all the food we produce to go to waste or be lost because of inappropriate practices, when 870 million people go hungry every day,” declared José Graziano de Silva, Director General of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation.
“The direct economic cost of food wastage of agricultural products (excluding fish and seafood), based on producer prices only, is about US $750 billion,” states its new report. That must mean more than US $1 trillion overall at retail prices.
The total is estimated at 1.3 billion tonnes, which works out at half a kilo per person per day.
The report provides loads of examples how to waste less. Governments, industry and consumers can and must all help.
