PET bottles as light bulbs

I’ve just seen the most extraordinary video. It’s on http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-14967535.

In the Philippines, used PET bottles are being refilled with water and inserted into corrugated roofing to diffuse daylight in thousands of the poorest people’s windowless homes.

Properly installed, a simple PET litre bottle can produce 50-60 watts of light, without electricity. It’s known as the “Litre of Light” project.
